Dupli-Color® Aerosol Paint and Application Tips for a Successful Paint Project
-
For maximum product performance read entire label and directions prior to paint application.
- Safety is very important. Always wear proper hand, face and eye protection when using paint and chemicals.
- Always make sure you are painting in a well ventilated area.
- Prep is the most important part of any paint project. A well prepped surface will ensure superior results.
- The surface must be dry and grease, wax and oil free. Use
Dupli-Color prep products to clean the surface.
All rust and corrosion must be removed prior to painting. The surface must also be scuffed if it is glossy. Paint will not bond to a glossy surface.Mask off any surrounding areas to protect from overspray. Always use a drop cloth or plastic under the paint project.
- Take your time. Error may result if you rush through your project.
- Take note of the temperature and humidity levels. A temperature range from 60° F to 95 °F is ideal and humidity levels less than around 70%. Avoid painting in direct sunlight or in the late evening.
- Recoat: Take note of the type of paint you are applying. Lacquer or Enamel.
- Enamel paints have a recoat window. A recoat window means
you only have an allowable time frame in which you can apply each coat of paint. After this time frame, Enamel must fully eure which usually takes about one week. The surface must then be scuffed before another coat is applied. Dupli-Color® Enamels
have a 1 hour recoat window.Lacquer paints do not have a recoat window. You can reapply lacquer at any time.
- Overcoat: Enamel vs Lacquer
- Lacquer CAN be applied over Lacquer
- Enamel CAN be applied over Enamel
- Enamel CAN be applied over Lacquer
- Lacquer CANNOT be applied over Enamel
- lf you are unsure of the surface you are recoating test a small
inconspicuous area for paint compatibility.
- Be sure to shake the aerosol can for 1 full minute prior to painting. Always test the aerosol can on a test surface or piece of cardboard before starting your paint project. This will show if the product is fully mixed.
- Smooth, even application is key. Hold the can 8-10 inches from the surface and spray in an even sweeping motion. Overlap your spray pattern.
- Always start your paint project with light coats. The first coat is called your "tack coat" and will help each additional coat bond to the surface. Follow up your tack coat with 2-3 medium coats. Your last 1-2 coats should be heavy but NOT too heavy so the paint runs or sags. Take your time.

Wet Sanding and Buffing
Dupli-Color® Paints can be wet sanded and buffed to a smooth glossy finish. After all paint steps are complete let paint dry for 24-48 hours depending on products used. Test an inconspicuous area to determine if paint has completely dried. Lightly wet sand any imperfections or orange peel with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper, being careful not to cut through the clear coat and into the color coat. Note: lf clear coat is sanded through to the color coat, repeat color and clear coat applications. Once wet sanding is complete the surface will appear dull. Wash surface with clean water and let dry. Buff with a random orbital or high speed buffer using a wool buffing pad and fine grit buffing compound. Follow up with a foam pad with a finishing compound. Note: High speed buffers are more aggressive and can damage the paint if used incorrectly. Use at low speed. Apply a quality automotive wax after 1 week
